Harvard Gardens /
Pollard Thomas Edwards

Redevelopment of a 1960s estate in South London. The design challenge was to maintain the density of this inner city neighbourhood while creating comfortable, beautiful homes and achieving a high quality of urban space. A major theme throughout the project was to address some of the key urban design problems from the original 60s design; namely difficult front-to-back relationships, undefined open space and a lack of human scale. The new design bisects the site with a small-scale pedestrian mews street and arranges the buildings around two courtyards creating spaces for a resident park and playground. The buildings are in elegant, high quality brick with accents such as balconies or dormer windows in colour. Materials are robust and in keeping with the historical context and are chosen to ensure that the project can age gracefully.

Berlin Metropolitan School /
Sauerbruch Hutton

Design for a modern two story school extension above an existing Plattenbau in Berlin. The extension is designed in lightweight, prefabricated timber allowing it to rest on the existing foundations without extra reinforcement. This design also allows for rapid construction during the school holidays to minimise any disruption. The timber panels and dynamic geometry are expressed internally, creating warm, interesting interior spaces. The external cladding is in copper, a material that will age and weather beautifully, providing an elegant contrast with the existing pre-fabricated masonry facade.

Almond Tree House

Design for a private house in rural Cyprus. The house is arranged around a central courtyard to provide a comfortable, shaded external room at the heart of the project. The programme is divided into a public front section containing large open-plan kitchen, living and dining, and a more private wing with bedrooms and home-office. The main space is double height with stunning views to the mountains. A key objective was working with the site and local climate to deliver a sustainable home without compromising on comfort, with carefully considered shading, thermal mass and renewable energy integration. Project currently on-site, with expected completion in 2025
