Shanghai East Railway station hub /

Like Hai Pai itself – the Rail Hub will be the ocean that absorbs the flow of a hundred rivers. The Shanghai East Station will be a gateway between Shanghai and the Chinese network of booming metropolis- and between China and the rest of the world. We have conceived of the station as a city of a 1000 gates. A network of arched gateways of various scales – from the intimate to the monumental – providing a majestic new public space that will be the first and last impression of Hai Pai and Shanghai for residents and visitors. A permeable 3 dimensional urban arena providing the maximum amount of connectivity between the different flows of people and passengers arriving by road, rail or air. Parks, plazas, terraces and gardens invite visitors to explore this new inside/outside environment from the platforms to the surrounding city. Echoing the traditional Chinese bridges or the poetic moongates – the repetition as spectacle – structure as decoration – turns utility in to beauty – and flexibility into fascination. The resultant station with its seamless extension into the surrounding city forms a new Transit Oriented Neighborhood that will form a civic center of gravity – for the city as well as the entire world.
